1.5 Tesla MRI

We have installed the first and only 1.5 Tesla MRI in the city of Shahjahanpur. Magnetic Resonance Imaging is the most advanced diagnostic modality in the field of Radiology. It uses a magnetic field around the body to get vital information at the cellular level which is used to diagnose the disease. MRI is the gold standard when it comes to Brain imaging, Spine imaging and Joint Imaging. Conditions like Brain Tumor, Spinal nerve root compression, Joint Ligament Injury, Rotator Cuff Injury in Shoulder, Slip Disc, all types of cancers are best diagnosed on MRI.

Non-contrast Angiography of the blood vessels on MRI gives results comparable to Contrast CT Angiography. For patients who have poor kidney function, MR Angiography is most suitable as contrast cannot be administered to such patients. In cases of brain stroke, MRI of the brain is able to differentiate between ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke.

Test & Timing

In MRI Scanning, the patient has to lie on the table. A coil is put around the area which is to be scanned. There are two variables in any MRI machine which determines the quality of imaging. First is the tesla strength of the magnet. MRI machines come in 0.2T, 0.3T, 0.5T, 1.0T, !.5T and 3.0T magnetic strength. Second thing is the channels in the machine and the coil. Higher the number of channels, better is the quality of imaging. In MRI scanning, several sequences need to be done during each test. Each sequence will take 3-5 minutes to be completed. The entire scan may take between 20-45 minutes. Many centres which offer discounts on the testing perform only 2-3 sequences so that more tests can be done. Do not fall for heavy discount on the MRI test as the report will be useless.

In contrast MRI, the patient should be in complete fasting for 5-6 hours. A blood test called kidney function test is done before MRI scan. If the values of Creatinine and Blood Urea are normal, then only contrast can be given to the patient.

Cost and Results

Plain MRI of any body part costs Rs. 6000 while the contrast study will cost Rs. 9500. Each body part has to be scanned separatly in MRI testing. While both the hips can be scanned in one test, both knees cannot be scanned in one test. MRI is the most advanced radiological investigation. The cost of the MRI machine is in the range of Rs. 2 - 10 crores. The 16 channel 1.5 Tesla MRI machine installed at Krishna Hospital has been made by GE, USA. This is one of the most advanced MRI machine in the region. Running of the MRI machine is also very expensive as 10 Tonnes of Airconditioners have to be kept running 24 hours even when the machine is not in use. The electricity bill for the MRI machine alone is in excess of Rs. 1 Lac per month. The maintenance of the machine costs Rs. 2.5 lacs per month. Each MRI scan gives more than 500 images of the body. Any good radiologist requires alteast one hour to go through these images and prepare the report. The report for the MRI scan is normally given within 24 hours of the test.
